Start: May 8 2010 - 11:00am End: May 8 2010 - 12:00pm Highway Historian and author Dave Clark will be at the Peotone Public Library on May 8th from 11 am - 12 pm. Many travelers believe that Route 66 in Illinois has more attractions per mile than any other state. With our economy and high price of gasoline, people are deciding to remain closer to home on their vacations. Route 66 on a Tank of Gas shows an in depth look into the many Mother Road attractions within the Land of Lincoln, within 300 miles of Chicago. We also suggest a “triangle route,” taking Route 66 to St. Louis, and then returning on the Great River Road and the Lincoln Highway.
Route 66 in Illinois follows a historic corridor first tread by Native Americans and French pioneers, and traced through the years by waterways, canals, and railroads. The historic corridor from Chicago to St. Louis through Springfield was marked in the early automobile era by named trails such as the Pontiac Trail and the E. St. Louis-Springfield-Chicago Way. In 1918, it became State Highway 4.
Dave Clark will tell the story of Route 66 in Illinois in pictures and music, and he will take us on a photographic road trip from the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago to the Mississippi River. Through 66 municipalities along Route 66 in the Land of Lincoln, the special character of the Mother Road in Illinois shines through.
This program is free and open to the public. To register for this program please call the Peotone Public Library District at 258-3436.
